Map of Romanian Nuclear Sites

Romania has been a forerunner in nuclear energy in Eastern Europe, with the Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant being its cornerstone. Located in Constanța County, it operates CANDU reactors, a technology developed in Canada, which uses heavy water as a moderator and natural uranium as fuel. Currently, the plant has two active reactors, contributing around 20% of the nation’s electricity supply. Romania’s focus on nuclear energy ensures a stable, low-carbon power source, reducing dependency on fossil fuels. Plans to expand the plant with additional reactors highlight Romania’s commitment to energy security, economic growth, and sustainable development in the face of climate challenges.
