What do Project Managers do?
As a Project Manager you are responsible for the planning of your project, the organisation of your project, and the day-to-day management associated with your project.

A project manager should be confident at managing the six key aspects of a project and they are:
- The project scope;
- The project schedule;
- The finances of the project;
- The project's resources;
- The risks associated with the project; and,
- Continually ensuring quality.
Skills and knowledge required to be a Project Manager
You might be wondering, what skills are required to become a project manager, the typical skills required are listed below:
- Technical Expertise: Knowledge of the fundamentals of project management, combined with strong analytical skills.
- Communication Skills: Excellent oral and written communication skills are a must, as well as an ability to actively listen.
- Interpersonal Skills: Be able to encourage, motivate and lead a project team.
- Adaptability, Flexibility and Resilience: Cost and time management, all whilst responding proactively to problems as they arise.
How do I become a project Manager?
There are a number of different pathways you can take to become a project manager. You can become a project manager by: completing a university degree; completing an apprenticeship; applying directly for the role; or, by working towards the role.

University
There are two potential routes that can be taken.
One option is to study towards a degree that has been accredited by a recognised body, such as one granted by the Association for Project Management (APM).
Alternatively, you may decide to follow your other interests and pursue a degree in any field and then enrol in a graduate management training programme or a postgraduate project management qualification further down the line.
Apprenticeships
Another potential pathway is to complete an apprenticeship. Examples of the apprenticeship opportunities available include the Associate Project Manager Level 4 Higher Apprenticeship and the Project Manager Level 6 Degree Apprenticeship. Apprenticeships offer the opportunity to gain experience and earn whilst you learn, all with the support of an experienced mentor and your peers.
Applying directly, or working towards the role
It may be possible to apply directly for a Project Manager position if you have an in-depth knowledge of the nuclear industry gained through several years’ worth of experience.
Alternatively, why not consider joining a company in a Project Support Role? You could gain experience, then complete project management qualifications whilst in the role.
