Map of Mexican Nuclear Sites

The history of nuclear power in Mexico began with the establishment of the National Nuclear Energy Commission (CNEN) in 1956, followed by Mexico joining the International Atomic Energy Agency in 1957. The Laguna Verde Nuclear Power Plant, Mexico’s only nuclear facility, started operations in 1990 with its first reactor, and a second reactor was added in 1995. These reactors use boiling water technology and contribute to Mexico’s energy mix. Over the years, Mexico has explored expanding its nuclear capacity, but economic and political challenges have slowed progress. Nuclear energy remains a key part of Mexico’s clean energy strategy. Find out where the country’s nuclear sites are located, and what goes on at each of them, on our interactive map of Mexican nuclear sites.
