Map of Advanced Gas-Cooled Reactors

Advanced Gas-Cooled Reactors (AGRs) are a type of nuclear reactor used in the United Kingdom. AGRs use carbon dioxide as the coolant and graphite as the moderator. They were developed as an improvement over the earlier Magnox reactors, featuring higher thermal efficiency and greater fuel economy. AGRs operate at higher temperatures, allowing for more efficient electricity generation. The reactors use enriched uranium dioxide fuel in stainless steel cladding. Despite their complexity and the challenges in their design and operation, AGRs have been a significant contributor to the UK’s electricity supply, showcasing the advancements in nuclear technology for cleaner energy solutions. Find out where all AGR sites are located, and what goes on at each of them, on our interactive map of Advanced Gas-Cooled Reactors.
