Map of African Nuclear Sites

Nuclear energy is an emerging sector in Africa, with several countries exploring its potential to meet growing electricity demands and drive economic development. While the continent has abundant renewable energy sources, nuclear power is being considered as a stable and reliable option to complement existing energy grids. South Africa is currently the only African country with an operational nuclear power plant, generating a significant portion of its electricity from the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station.

Other nations, including Egypt, Kenya, Nigeria, and Ghana, have expressed interest in developing nuclear energy programs. Egypt, for example, is constructing its first nuclear plant in collaboration with Russia, signaling a commitment to diversifying its energy mix. The African Union has also recognized the role of nuclear technology in addressing energy shortages and boosting industrial growth.

However, challenges such as infrastructure development, financial investment, and regulatory frameworks must be addressed before widespread adoption can occur. International partnerships and knowledge-sharing will be vital in ensuring Africa harnesses nuclear energy responsibly and efficiently. If managed well, nuclear power could provide sustainable electricity, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, and support Africa’s aspirations for economic and technological advancement.  Find out where the continent’s nuclear sites are located, and what goes on at each of them, on our interactive map of African nuclear sites.

Quick Guide to using the Map of African Nuclear Sites

MAP – Click and drag to move the map around. Hold Ctrl and use the mouse wheel to zoom in or out. Alternatively use the zoom buttons in the top right corner.

POINTS – Points are coloured based on the purpose of the nuclear site.

COUNTER – The counter in the top left displays the number of nuclear sites under each purpose. Clicking on a specific counter lets you see only sites that fall within that category.

POPUPS – Hovering over a specific point on the map will show you a popup containing additional information about the site.

Below is the full data set used to create the Africa Nuclear Sites Map. You can use it to look up specific nuclear sites.
