China has become a global leader in nuclear energy, rapidly expanding its capacity to meet growing electricity demands while reducing reliance on fossil fuels. As of 2025, China operates dozens of nuclear reactors, with many more under construction, making it one of the fastest-growing nuclear energy markets in the world. The government views nuclear power as a vital component of its carbon reduction strategy, aiming to achieve peak emissions before 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060.
To support this growth, China is investing heavily in advanced nuclear technologies, including small modular reactors (SMRs) and fourth-generation designs such as thorium-based and high-temperature gas-cooled reactors. These innovations aim to improve safety, efficiency, and sustainability. Additionally, China is expanding its domestic uranium supply chain and developing advanced waste management solutions to address concerns over nuclear waste storage.
