World Association of Nuclear Operators

The World Association of Nuclear Operators, or WANO, is a non-profit organisation with the aim to unite every company and country in the world that has an operating commercial nuclear power plant. Their mission is to achieve the highest possible standards of nuclear safety.

In the aftermath of the Chernobyl accident in 1986, nuclear operators worldwide recognised the need for a united front in ensuring the safety and reliability of nuclear power plants. Thus, WANO was born in 1989, uniting nuclear operators from around the globe in a shared mission of continuous improvement and excellence in nuclear operations.

Function

WANO’s role within the nuclear industry is crucial.

Akin to that of a vigilant guardian, the organisation has several key functions. Their role also includes working collaboratively alongside like-minded bodies such as the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO).

A Collaborative Journey Towards Excellence

In a world where safety is paramount, WANO stands as a beacon of collaboration and excellence in the nuclear sector. By fostering a culture of transparency, sharing knowledge and best practice, and providing support and guidance to all of its members, WANO plays a vital role in ensuring that nuclear power remains trusted as a safe, sustainable and reliable energy source for generations to come.
