The INPO Story
What does INPO stand for?
The Institute of Nuclear Power Operators, or INPO, works nationally and internationally to establish guidelines for nuclear operations and to share good practice.
Why was INPO created?
In the wake of the Three Mile Island incident in 1979, the U.S. nuclear industry recognised the need for a centralised organisation dedicated to promoting safety and excellence in nuclear operations. Thus, INPO was founded and continues to be funded by the US nuclear industry to this day. Their mission is to promote a positive safety culture whilst developing excellence in nuclear power generation.
What does INPO do?
INPO plays a pivotal role within the nuclear industry, serving as a catalyst for excellence and safety across a spectrum of functions.
Their role includes working with like-minded bodies such as the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO).

A Journey Towards Operational Excellence
In a world where safety is non-negotiable, INPO stands as a beacon of excellence and reliability in the nuclear power industry. By fostering collaboration, sharing knowledge, and promoting a culture of continuous improvement, INPO helps ensure that nuclear power remains a safe, reliable, and sustainable energy source for generations to come.
- Performance Evaluations and Assessments: Like a coach analysing a team's performance, INPO conducts rigorous evaluations and assessments of nuclear power plants to identify strengths, weaknesses and opportunities for improvement. These evaluations help plants benchmark their performance against industry standards and best practices.
- Sharing Best Practices and Lessons Learned: In the world of nuclear operations, knowledge is power. INPO facilitates the exchange of best practice and lessons learned among its member utilities, ensuring that insights gained from one plant's experience can benefit others, leading to enhanced safety and performance industry-wide.
- Training and Development: The key to success in any endeavour lies in continuous learning and development. INPO offers training programmes, workshops and resources to help nuclear professionals enhance their skills, deepen their knowledge and stay abreast of the latest industry developments.
- Safety Culture Enhancement: Safety is not just a set of rules – it should be a culture that feeds everyday behaviours. INPO works with nuclear organisations to cultivate a strong safety culture characterised by open communication, proactive risk management, a questioning attitude and a commitment to continuous improvement at all levels of the organisation.
- Emergency Preparedness and Response: In times of crisis, effective response is paramount. INPO assists its member organisations in developing robust emergency preparedness plans and provides support and guidance during crisis situations, helping to safeguard public health and safety.
